Hosei University Press’s prolific publication of translations and general-interest books in the years after its 1948 founding made it a crucial provider of university extension services amid the “postwar enlightenment” movement to promote democracy and modernization in Japan following World War II. By its 60th anniversary in 2008, the press had produced some 2,500 titles. From academic studies and textbooks to works for a general audience, its broad range of publications in the humanities and social sciences represents an excellent balance between original scholarship and translations of overseas sources. While arguably best known for the long-running Universitas series of translated works, primarily in philosophy and thought, the press has also garnered acclaim for two more recent series: Sapientia, a collection of inquiries into contemporary society begun in 2008, and Mizu to “machi” no monogatari (Of Water and Cities), issued since 2009.

Hozokan is a publisher of books on Buddhism, both for specialists and for the general reader. Tracing its roots back some four centuries to the beginning of the Tokugawa era, the company has been nurtured throughout its history by the Buddhist milieu of the city it calls home, the ancient capital of Kyoto. From the outset its guiding principle has been to "open the Dharma-store for the multitudes, and endow them all with treasures of merit"?a credo it believes is as apt as ever amid the turbulence of the present age. The mission of Hozokan is to publish titles, primarily based on Buddhist teachings, that will nurture moral and spiritual growth and foster a new age of spirituality in the 21st century.
