Doshinsha Publishing Co. got its start in 1957 as a publisher of kamishibai?"paper-panel stories," designed to be read/told from text on the back of the panels while children view the illustrations from the front. It was founded amid widespread calls from the general public for sustained peace and greater democracy following World War II, and with support from parents and teachers wishing to provide a happy and culturally enriched future for their children and pupils.

The company published its first children's book in 1960, and since then has brought out numerous titles that went on to become longtime bestsellers. In 1963 it began publishing a pamphlet for readers titled Haha no hiroba (Mothers' Plaza); having gone through several re-designs over the years, the publication now appears as a monthly bulletin, with more than 550 issues published to date. In 1967, Doshinsha brought out Japan's first picture book for infants. The company now publishes some 400 kamishibai and 600 books.

The roots of Toyo Keizai Inc. go back to 1895, when the magazine Toyo keizai shinpo (Oriental Economic News) was launched. To fulfill its mission to “contribute to the development of a healthy economy,” the company engages actively in the public discourse, in part by making available a wide variety of information relating to economics and industry, as well as statistical data essential to the functioning of a market economy. Shukan toyo keizai (Oriental Economic Weekly) is today one of Japan’s top three economic weeklies, and Kaisha shikiho (Japan Company Handbook), the company’s quarterly data book, is regarded as the most trusted guide to Japanese business. Toyo Keizai publishes numerous other magazines as well as an extensive list of books on business and economics, offers advertising and database services, has moved into the realm of digital publishing with a growing slate of e-books and e-magazines, and maintains an online presence at toyokeizai.net. The company has recently added seminars to its menu of business support activities, and, as part of a broader global initiative, launched Chugoku kaisha shikiho (China Company Handbook), an edition of its flagship data book that covers companies in China.
