Since its founding in 1960, Gakusosha has distinguished itself as a publisher of books relating to veterinary science. Its mission is to provide Japanese veterinary scholars, practitioners, and students with the latest research and information from around the world through the highest quality publications.

In 1973, at a time when information on veterinary science was still relatively scarce in Japan, Gakusosha launched an annual series titled The Veterinary Clinics of North America to make available the latest information about practices in the United States. In 1985 it launched the Juigaku rinsho shirizu (Veterinary Practice Series) as a means of better disseminating the findings of veterinary researchers in Japan, and in 1995 it began publishing Japanese editions of the highly regarded manuals put out by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA). Many of the company’s books are accompanied by visual aids on CD-ROM or DVD.

Kagaku-Dojin Publishing Co. was founded in 1954 for the purpose of issuing a monthly scientific journal titled Kagaku (Chemistry). The new enterprise was capitalized jointly by Professors Munio Kotake (who named the company) and Ryutaro Tsuchida of Osaka University; Professors Ichiro Sakurada and Ryohei Oda of Kyoto University; Professors Minoru Imoto and Takashi Kubota of Osaka City University; and the first two presidents of the company, Toshiaki Sone and Teiichi Ueshita. The journal has grown and flourished over the years, with its 750th issue slated to appear in late 2013. In addition, the company publishes occasional supplements to the journal focused on individual topics under the Bessatsu Kagaku (Additional Volume of Chemistry) imprint, as well as a now-extensive backlist of books ranging across the full spectrum of scientific disciplines. Since its earliest days, Kagaku-Dojin has made “quality content and ease of understanding” its motto and has chosen not to be driven solely by the pursuit of profit. Rather, it places priority on publishing books that contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and disseminating that specialized knowledge to the general public.
