Ie-no-Hikari Association is the publishing, educational, and cultural arm of the JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives) Group. The association publishes the general-interest family magazine Ie no hikari (Light in the Home); the opinion magazine Chijo (Terra Firma), targeted primarily at leaders of farming villages and the various JA organizations; the children’s magazine Chagurin (a name based on the English words “child,” “agriculture,” and “green”), which promotes food and agricultural education; the home gardening magazine Yasai-batake (Vegetable Garden); and a wide variety of books on agriculture, cooking, and health. The association also sponsors cooking, craft, and health classes that make use of these publications, and holds cooking, writing, and art contests, runs volunteer training seminars, conducts surveys of various kinds, and organizes international exchange activities. The JA Group belongs to the cooperative movement represented by the credo “one for all, and all for one,” and was founded on the principle that although the strength of a lone individual is limited, the pooled strength of many can exercise tremendous power. Ie-no-Hikari Association membership extends to 47 prefectural and 5 national JA bodies.
