The company's range of publications gradually expanded to magazines for preschoolers, general magazines, and books (including picture books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias). Thereafter, Shogakukan launched a variety of manga magazines targeting pre-adolescent boys and girls, teenagers, and adults. The year 1969 saw the birth of Doraemon, one of Japan's most famous cartoon characters, to be followed by others such as Pokemon, Hamtaro, InuYasha, and Detective Conan. Shogakukan has also achieved success with its fashion and lifestyle magazines, including CanCam, Oggi, and BE-PAL. Currently publishing 17 different manga magazines, Shogakukan sells some 120 million copies every year in this category alone. Sogensha traces its origins to a small Osaka bookshop opened in 1892 by Sotojiro Yabe and his wife Tomi. “Good books that last” has been the company’s motto from the outset, and over the years it has amassed a highly respected backlist that includes titles on history, religion and philosophy, culture, psychology, business, science and health, literature and literary criticism, language, reference, and other general interest categories.

Although the publishing world has entered an era of disruptive changes that might be compared in degree to those following the introduction of the printing press in the 15th century, one thing that will never change is the use of the written word as a means of sharing ideas and information across time and space. Sogensha will continue to make a broad range of intellectual properties accessible to readers in whatever form they demand?whether through the publication of traditional books and magazines, the creation of digital content, the sponsorship of seminars linked to company publications, or the development and sale of related merchandise.
