PHP Institute was established in 1946 by the founder of the Panasonic Corporation, Konosuke Matsushita. The initials "PHP" come from the English phrase "Peace and Happiness through Prosperity," which encapsulates the institute's mission of bringing peace and fulfillment to human society by assuring both spiritual and material abundance.

The institute has long published books across a wide spectrum of genres, from business to literature, practical guides to children's books, and in recent years it has added "light novels" (a distinctively Japanese category of fiction targeted primarily at teens) to the mix?over 600 titles each year, offering something for everybody. Among them are such bestsellers as the essay collection Michi o hiraku (The Path), by Konosuke Matsushita; the biographical novel Rikyu ni tazune yo (Ask This of Rikyu), by Ken'ichi Yamamoto; the mystery novel Mugenbana (Dream Flower), by Keigo Higashino; and the Meiro ehon (Maze Picture Books) series, by Gentaro Kagawa.
