In 1932 the Japan Telephone and Building Company (Nippon Denwa Tatemono K.K.) launched a PR publication titled Jutaku to denwa (Home and Telephone). A home and lifestyle magazine for general audiences, Hogaraka (Clear and Bright), went on sale in 1955 in bookstores nationwide. In 1961 the publishing side of JTBC’s Division of Advertising and Publications was spun off to become the independent Hogaraka Publishing Co. Hogaraka was renamed Nyu hausu (NewHOUSE) in 1962, and the name of the company itself was changed to NewHOUSE Co., Ltd. the following year. NewHOUSE established itself as a publisher of magazines, "mooks," and books about homes and architecture, as well as children's titles and study aids. It has been a member of the Japan Book Publishers Association since 1990 and is a supporting member of the Japan Publishers Club. In 2006 the company moved into new quarters in a building dubbed "The Wall" in Shinkawa, Chuo-ku, Tokyo. The core of its activities today continues to be the publication of books.
