Synopsis

This book is a collection of paintings and calligraphy by 46 patients who suffer from severe aphasia, paralysis, impaired visual cognition, and other disabilities as a result of strokes. It is a second collection of such creations, following in the footsteps of a volume with the same title published in 1997 but now out of print. From clumsy initial efforts to refined works of great artistic skill, the paintings and calligraphy tell the tale of how these severely disabled patients fought long and hard to reclaim their self-respect and dignity. No reader will remain unmoved. The collection embodies author Kotoko Yokohari’s hope that others, too, will be inspired to make their light shine again, no matter how severely or for how long they may have been impaired.
