Over the half century since its first edition was released in 1965, this long-selling Japanese language dictionary targeted at grade-school children has been updated eight times to bring it abreast with the times and the latest terminology. Combined sales figures for all editions through the present 9th exceed ten million copies.

All kanji are provided with furigana (phonetic characters that supply the correct reading), allowing children to sound out the word even if they have not yet learned those particular kanji. This makes it an ideal reference for adult learners of Japanese as a second language as well. The dictionary contains some 35,000 headwords?a count that makes it suitable for study through the ninth grade. It adheres to the usage guidelines issued by the Japanese government for the 2,136 "regular use" kanji, and includes helpful notes on the 1,006 "education kanji" taught during the six elementary grades. Word entries offer sentence examples as well as lists of synonyms and other related terms. An abundance of sidebars and graphical illustrations supplements the standard entries with the kind of information often found only in encyclopedias. A handy reference at the end of the volume covers such topics as honorific language, pitch accent, and usage rules for kana, the phonetic characters that make up the Japanese syllabary.
