Content: GENKI is an integrated textbook covering the four basic skills?speaking, listening, reading, and writing?at a beginning level. Comprised of two volumes totaling 23 lessons, it teaches beginning-level grammar, approximately 300 kanji, and a vocabulary of some 1,100 words. As course material for universities and high schools throughout the world, as well as a self-learning resource for working adults, GENKI has proven a popular text for learning Japanese in an efficient and enjoyable manner. It proactively incorporates high-frequency vocabulary and phrases occurring in situations familiar to students, and provides a full lineup of illustrated communicative practices. Special care is taken to create a good balance of accuracy, fluency, and complexity, so that students do not find themselves able to speak correctly but not fluently, or able to speak fluently but unable to address any but the simplest topics. The text is made up of the Dialogue and Grammar section and Reading and Writing section. In the former, students learn the fundamentals of grammar, and while simultaneously increasing their vocabulary, they study speaking and listening. In the Reading and Writing section, through reading and writing Japanese characters, students cultivate their skills in this area.
