Synopsis

This volume is an expanded version of the catalog prepared for an exhibition entitled Ryōji Ikeda: The Musing and the Breathing of Immanence, held in the art museum and library at Musashino Art University in November 2015.

The deep shadows etched into the monotone intaglio prints that Ryōji Ikeda produces through photo-etching and other techniques are imbued with a distinctive view of life and death that inspires contemplation. This book divides Ikeda’s oeuvre into four periods and surveys each of those separately to highlight their characteristics while also looking at elements that pervade his unique and sustained approach to artistic expression. The volume contains roughly 90 works of art, mainly copperplate prints, extending from Ikeda’s early period to his latest work, and also includes a detailed chronology of his life. It is the ideal volume for tracing his artistic development over a more than 40-year career.
