Synopsis

Dogs can be members of our family, and partners in our lives. That was the message of the author’s previous work, Lovely Stories I Heard from Dogs: Fourteen Tales That Will Make You Cry, a bestseller that won fans all over Japan. This book, the second in the series, likewise offers 14 dramatic stories based on real-life experiences, as well as charming illustrations and photographs of its canine heroes. As in the first volume, seven of the tales are framed as messages from owners to their dogs, and seven from dogs to their owners. In many instances the owners are inspired by their pets to rebuild their lives. For their part, the dogs display compassion toward their owners through such sentiments as “I’m always on your side” and “I’m so grateful to live with you.”

As these anecdotes make clear, the relationship between a dog and its owner is a two-way street of mutual support. On one level the stories may be considered fiction, but fundamentally they are not, for it is indisputable that the human protagonists felt genuine love from their dogs.
