Areno Inoue (1961–)  is the daughter of Mitsuharu Inoue, an Akutagawa Prize-nominated novelist. The younger Inoue made her writerly debut in 1989, when she (along with Kaori Ekuni and others) received the first Japanese Prix Femina, a prize chosen by an all-woman panel to encourage emerging female writers. Subsequently she also began translating picture books. Since then she has steadily built a name for herself, winning the 2004 Shimase Award for her short-story collection Love Stories for Jun’ichi and the 2008 Naoki Prize for Kiriha e (To the Mine Face). Other notable love stories include Dare yori mo utsukushii tsuma (The Most Beautiful Wife, 2005), Tsuya no yoru (Tsuya’s Night, 2010), and Mushi musume (Insect Woman, 2014).
