Tomomi

Tomomi 友弥

Tomomi (1979–) was born in Hokkaido. She began submitting manuscripts to contests while working as an intensive care nurse at the University of Tokyo Hospital, and published her first picture book, Kokoro no kagami (A Mirror for the Heart), in 2012. Two years later she moved to San Francisco for a year to study English, and while there completed work on her second picture book, Sora no ashiato (Sora’s Tracks), which is based on an anecdote about the monk Kūkai, founder of the the Shingon school of Buddhism. In 2016 she published Richādo no yubiwa (A Ring from Richard) and its sequel Richādo no nikki (Richard’s Diary), both billed as picture books for grown-ups. That same year she opened an online shop named “Manuel and Olivia” after two characters she created, offering a wide variety of merchandise. She also mounts solo exhibitions of her work.
